About the Luthier

In 2005, master luthier Dan Smocke established his eponymous guitar company, drawing upon a lifetime steeped in both music and craftsmanship in the Milwaukee area. Though formal apprenticeships were scarce in the region, Smocke honed his craft through diverse channels: scholarly texts, mentorship from local instrument repair artisans, and most notably, the invaluable guidance of renowned Italian luthier Ivo Baldoni, who practiced his art on Milwaukee's east side. This multifaceted education, combined with Smocke's extensive experience as a professional musician, culminated in his mastery of creating exquisite archtop guitars. Each instrument that emerges from his workshop represents the pinnacle of lutherie, embodying both meticulous craftsmanship and world-class quality.

“I pay close attention to every meticulous detail, especially the tone of the guitar. The tonal complexity, clarity, depth, volume, and "throatiness" of sound is constantly on my mind during the build process.”  – Dan Smocke
